Poker tourney raises money to help with 6-year-old medical bills

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- Supporters of a 6-year-old Albany boy battling a serious brain disorder are coming together once more to help with his medical bills. This time, with a Vegas style event.

This may seem like a regular game of poker with friends, but these people have come together to help Thomas Cooper fight a rare disorder.

Deandra Jones helped to organize the Texas Hold ‘Em poker tournament. She was able to get some area businesses to sponsor a table. Because of that, $800 have already been raised that will go towards treatment for Thomas.

Several streets close for Spring Fest and SB&T Bike Race

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- Albany Engineer K. Bruce Maples, P. E.  announced  road closures that will affect downtown traffic.

Beginning at 6:00 A.M., Saturday, May 25, 2013, the following streets will be closed for the Spring Fest and SB&T Bike Race: 

  • 100 and 200 Blocks of Washington Street
  • 200 Block of Broad Avenue
  • 100 and 200 Blocks of Jackson Street
  • 200 Block of Flint Avenue
  • 100 and 200 Blocks of Pine Avenue. 

 

Panthers to host Beer Fest

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- Not going out of town for Memorial Day?  Don't worry, the Albany Panthers want to make sure you have a good weekend as they host their first ever beer fest.

You can sample more than 20 types of beer Saturday night at the Civic Center as a part of the first annual Beer Fest put on by the panthers.

There will be plenty of entertainment including musical acts such as Highway 55 and others. There will also be bull riding, a hot wing eating contest and beer pong tables setup for attendees.

Police increase road patrols during holiday weekend

Dougherty County Police Officer issues seat belt citation

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- The Memorial Day Holiday weekend is here, and Dougherty county police are gearing up for a busy weekend.

They'll be keeping a close eye on the roads, and are asking motorists to stay safe.

Police said drivers should buckle up, slow down and allow themselves a little more time to get to their destinations due to expected heavy traffic. Graduation ceremonies, festivals and holiday travel are all expected to contribute to road congestion.

Crosses go up Saturday for Memorial Day

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- This memorial day, fallen veterans will be remembered in special way thanks to an Albany man's donation.

A field of crosses will be on display, allowing South Georgians to pay their respects for the men who died while serving in the military.

122 white crosses bear the names of men who died in combat while fighting for our country.

Bill Brooks made and donated the crosses to the American Legion and will be displayed on the front lawn of the Albany Mall this memorial day.

Multiple agencies work to make Albany safe this summer

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- Law enforcement agencies in Albany and Dougherty County are teaming up and strategically hitting the streets to make sure you stay safe this summer.

Operation Takeback is a summer-long program to catch people with active warrants and clean up the streets.

Part of the operation will focus on housing projects.

Ole Thornton is one of many residents in the Golden Oaks Housing Project who says a coordinated police effort to clean up the streets of Albany and Housing developments across the city is a fantastic idea.

Police on the lookout for bike thieves

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- Albany police are still on the lookout for a couple of thieves, who were prevented from selling a stolen bicycle by an alert WALB fan.

The expensive road bike was stolen from a Kirt Phillips' storage shed at his Cumberland Lane home a little after 4 a.m. Tuesday.

We posted a picture of the bike and a surveillance shot of the crooks on walb.com. When two men tried to sell the bike at Mega Pawn, an employee recognized it from our web story and confronted the men. They took off.
