Students and officials prepare for tornadoes

Students and staff at Albany State jumped into action when a tornado siren sounded Tuesday. Fortunately it was a drill, mirrored by Police on the campus.

Students were instructed to crouch down inside the hall during this mock tornado drill.

"The best practice is to practice it perfect, says Gregory Elder, ASU Assistant Chief of Police. "And once you get to an achievable standard, hopefully in the event of something major happening they'll revert back to their training. That's our hope."

'Reading Under The Big Top' Camp

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- The chief judge of Dougherty County's Superior Court opened an East Albany summer reading program Tuesday morning.

Dozens of excited kids listened as Judge Willie Lockette read books to them. It was the kickoff of the 14th annual Reading Under The Big Top Summer Camp, sponsored by the J. L. Litman Memorial Funeral Service on East Clark Avenue.

Shirley Litman, a teacher for 30 years, hosts the reading camp each summer and thinks good role models like Judge Lockette help.

Child death investigation underway

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- A child death investigation is underway in Albany after a six month old boy was found dead Sunday morning at an East Albany home.

The child's name is Ja'Kobian Emmanuel Davis.  Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler said the boy's body was found inside a home in the 200 block of Marie Avenue Sunday morning around 10 a.m.

Officials say the child was in the care of a baby sitter, while his parents were out of town.

Albany man wanted on several felony charges

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- Information from APD-

Antonio Rentrell Hayes is now considered a wanted person by the Albany Police Department.

Tuesday, Robbery/Homicide Detectives obtained the following warrants against Hayes:
 

 

  • Aggravated Assault 
  • Kidnapping 
  • False Imprisonment 
  • Sexual Battery   

 

Police say a woman was physically assaulted at knife point by Hayes on Monday in the 400 block of South McKinley in early June. 

School board members won't raise property taxes

Dougherty County School Board members want
property owners to know, they won't raise your taxes despite another tight
budget year.

Monday night Board members
held a public hearing to give people a chance to give their input on the
proposed budget for the upcoming school year.
 

Nobody showed up Monday night.
 They made up a budget deficit by closing
several schools so a tax increase wouldn't be needed. 

Diabetes Awareness Camp at Albany YMCA

There are at least 42 children in Dougherty County that have been diagnosed with diabetes. The Albany YMCA and the Phoebe Medical Center are hoping to halt that number by hosting Camp Fit and FWD to help fight against the disease. Some of the attendees have it while others are learning how to avoid it with a proper diet and outdoor activity.

Albany Tech announces partnership with AIC Wireless

Students and faculty gathered at Albany Technical College today as the school announced a new partnership with AIC Wireless.

"We feel that this program is going to give them the opportunity to not
only fill out their resumes," said AIC Wireless TOC Zane Brown. "But it will also fill a need that these local
business owners and national business owners have to find people
qualified to do this work."
