ALBANY, GA - Tips on going green for the holiday from the City of Albany

The Holiday season is here and that brings people together for festive meals, exchanging gifts, and more. What else will this time of year bring? A LOT OF WASTE… In fact, it is estimated that household create 25% more waste during the Holidays than any other time of the year.

From additional food waste, packaging, gift boxes and wrapping paper, the additional waste accumulated across Dougherty County during the Holiday season will be staggering.

The market is open from 8 a.m.- 1 p.m.  at the parking deck on the corner of Jackson St. and Broad Ave.

Environmental toxins linked to hardening of arteries

(HealthDay News) -- Environmental pollutants such as dioxins, PCBs and pesticides are associated with hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), according to a new study.

Atherosclerosis is the major underlying cause of cardiovascular diseases, which are the most common cause of death in industrialized countries, said the researchers at Uppsala University in Sweden.

ALBANY, GA – The Keep Albany Dougherty Beautiful will be having another event Saturday, September 17 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. in order to promote the proper disposal of unwanted electronics.

Old and unwanted electronics, unwanted and outdated medications, and old printer and copier ink cartridges will all be collected at this drive in the parking lot behind the civic center.

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., applauded Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack’s decision to declare 150 drought-stricken counties in Georgia disaster areas, as requested by Gov. Nathan Deal. Since April 2011, many parts of Georgia have experienced extreme weather conditions and suffered numerous crop losses. With the USDA Secretarial Disaster Designation, Georgia farmers will be able to apply for emergency loans and other benefits to ease losses.

Catch a glimpse of the meteors

Catch a glimpse of the meteors

ALBANY, GA – The Lyrids meteor shower is expected to begin Thursday, April 21.

The meteor shower has been in development since April 16 but it’s predicted to conitue through Friday, April 22.

The best time to try and catch a glimpse of the meteors will be between 10:00 pm, when Lyra rises above the horizon, and the time when the moon rises into view.
