ALBANY, GA- Georgia is one of the top states for identity theft. And Saturday, people in Albany took action to prevent becoming a victim.
Folks showed up to the shred-a-thon at Heritage Bank with bags and bags of personal documents that needed to be destroyed.
Authorities say identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes.
"Most people think cyber theft, other forms of identity theft and really, dumpster diving, people getting your trash, that's the most popular way thieves steal your information," Heather Nichols, Heritage Bank of the South.
Organizers say shredding your documents is one of the best ways to protect your identity. The annual event is sponsored by Shred-Ex, Heritage Bank and WALB.
