DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA - The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that Southwest Georgia's preliminary unemployment rate declined to 8.9 percent in October.

That is one-tenth of a percentage point from the 9 percent in September and in October 2011 the rate was 9.7 percent.

Georgia's October seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined to 8.7 percent, which was down three-tenths of a percentage point from the September rate of 9 percent. The October 2011 jobless rate was 9.7 percent.

DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA – The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that the preliminary unemployment rate in the Southwest Georgia area declined to 9.0 percent in September.

The rate declined primarily because there were 370 fewer layoffs in manufacturing, construction, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, administrative and support services, and accommodations and food services, plus 1,037 more people were employed.

The September unemployment rate for Dougherty County it is 10.6 percent.

The names of more than 1,600 black American high school seniors who have been designated as semi-finalists in the 49th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program have been announced by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) officials.

High school juniors from all parts of the United States requested consideration when they took the 2011 Pre-SAT and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The Albany High School Marching Chiefs performed at the annual Hawkinsville Invitational Festival on September 29. Bands at this event are judged in the areas of Band, Flags, and Drumline.

The Marching Chiefs scored superior ratings, the highest possible, in each of the three categories.

The Marching Chiefs will continue in competition against some of Georgia's best bands on October 13 in Blackshear at the Sound of Silver Invitational.

Mt. Zion Gardens Apartments has opened its doors to faculty and staff with this community tutorial program known as SEAS (Successfully Educating All Students).
