ALBANY, GA – News release from Dougherty County School System

The names of more than 1,600 black American high school seniors who have been designated as semi-finalists in the 49th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program have been announced by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) officials.

High school juniors from all parts of the United States requested consideration when they took the 2011 Pre-SAT and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The Albany High School Marching Chiefs performed at the annual Hawkinsville Invitational Festival on September 29. Bands at this event are judged in the areas of Band, Flags, and Drumline.

The Marching Chiefs scored superior ratings, the highest possible, in each of the three categories.

The Marching Chiefs will continue in competition against some of Georgia's best bands on October 13 in Blackshear at the Sound of Silver Invitational.

'Remember The Titans' coach to speak at Darton State

ALBANY, GA – The famous football coach chronicled in the 2000 Disney film Remember the Titans starring Academy Award winning actor Denzel Washington will be speaking at Darton State College.

Herman Boone will be speaking at Darton’s Distinguished Lecture Series Wednesday, October 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Boone’s speech titled “Becoming a Titan in Tough Times" will be in the Student Center in room 266.

Coach Boone is a former American high school football coach, and most famous for coaching at the newly integrated T.C. Williams High School.

Saturday, September 22, saw the beginning of a new community outreach program implemented by Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School and designed to bridge the gap between home and school.

Mt. Zion Gardens Apartments has opened its doors to faculty and staff with this community tutorial program known as SEAS (Successfully Educating All Students).

Darton to host election straight talk for students

The 2012 presidential election is just around the corner and Darton State College is giving students the chance to learn more about each candidate. 

On Wednesday, September 26, from 11:00 a.m. to noon, Darton State College will host a campus-wide event called Election Straight Talk.

The event, sponsored by the Darton Honors Program, is designed to help Darton students learn about he presidential candidates from a nonpartisan perspective.
